8 Kitchen Renovation Fails and How They Could Have Been Prevented

When you decide to renovate your kitchen, hiring the right contractor is essential. If you aren’t working with someone who knows what they’re doing, you could be in for some big surprises. While renovation fails are funny when they happen to someone else, they’re not so hilarious when they happen to you. There’s a lot to get right when you renovate, including usability, safety and style. If something goes wrong and you have to pay to have it fixed, you’re not going to be happy. Choose the right contractor and avoid some awful kitchen renovation fails, such as these ones:

Useless Drawers

Installing kitchen drawers so neither can be fully opened (and they certainly can’t be opened at the same time!) is pretty useless. Smart design taking usability into account prevents silly problems like this so you have all the storage that you need.

Nonsensical Plumbing and Wiring

Not only do water and electricity not mix, but faucets typically need something for the water to run into, right? So this faucet right next to an electrical outlet is a fail on at least two levels. Hiring the right contractor eliminates these problems.

Poorly Positioned Faucets

Another potential faucet problem is not matching them up with the sink. Installed incorrectly, it might not reach the sink or could miss it completely. Smart design from your contractor is essential if you want to avoid these rookie mistakes.

Trapped in the House

Most people want to be able to use their doors, not be blocked in by a counter top. Something like this is pure carelessness, and would never happen if the contractors were paying attention even just a little bit.

Squeezed in Tight

Some people have small kitchens but a good designer knows how to make the most of what they have. Good design and installation prevents crazy space problems that render the kitchen unusable.

Ugly Features

Some kitchen features are just not meant to be seen, like great big air ducts. A good contractor knows how to hide all of the less attractive stuff through installation and clever solutions.

Crashingly Bad Installation

One thing that you definitely don’t want is a dangerous kitchen feature, and a cabinet suddenly falling off the wall is definitely that. No legitimate contractor would do such a bad job, so take careful steps to vet them before hiring.

When Tiling Goes Wrong

If you’ve ever looked at floor or wall tiles and thought it looked easy, you could be in for a shock. Good tiling takes skill, and bad tiling can be REALLY bad — as the picture above shows. You need someone who knows what they’re doing!
