Dealing With Flooding & Renovation

After flood devastation, homeowners are always quick to start thinking about restoration. There’s a good reason for this – flooding is so damaging to a house that the faster it’s dealt with, the easier it is to restore the house back to its former glory. The problem is that most people think about redecorating flood damaged space, rather than restoration of the house for safety reasons.

Restoration after a flood is more than drying out the carpets and replacing the wallpaper on the walls. Flood restoration is ensuring at a basic level that your home is safe again. Water damage can create a perfect environment in your home for mould, which can lead to health issues that you shouldn’t have to deal with. The answer? Masters Construction! We are experts in home restoration, offering both emergency and non-emergency restoration services.

Here’s how to deal with your renovation post-flood:

  • Clear out your things and start the cleanup process. Any broken or damaged items need removing before renovations can begin. Check for damage and remove appliances, furniture, and even wooden doors if needed.
  • Once the house is clean and cleared of debris, the drying process can begin. Ventilators, fans and other drying aids should be used to get the house ready for renovation. If you don’t properly dry out your home, you will find that vinyl floors could be damaged quickly, any new flooring can blister, and paint work will have cracks as the wood dries. Make sure not to miss this step as it’s not worth the extra expenses down the road.
  • Replacing flooring can be a big job when you need restoration flooding and repair services. All laminate, hardwood, carpeting, tiling, and even the subfloor underneath may need to be ripped up and disposed of. Laminate and hardwood will swell and warp with the moisture, while carpet will be a perfect place for mould to grow. Even tile, which doesn’t absorb water, can be damaged with the wood substrate underneath. Wet wood is just no good!
  • Drying out the walls is extremely important and opening them up to dry out the studs is a crucial part of the restoration flooding and repair services that Masters Construction offers. While the walls are open, the drywall needs removing for at least a foot above the waterline, all the way to the floor. Otherwise, you’re risking mouldy, mildewy walls!
  • Prepare to wait for some time before you can get your house back to normal. Restoration and flooding repairs aren’t always something that you can do on your own, and with the professionals on hand you can make sure that your house is 100% back to its best before you put your (dry) belongings back inside.
